Linear perspective, color theory, and the origins of photography

What are the visual arts?

The visual arts are forms of art perceived primarily through sight — painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography among others — created to communicate ideas, emotions, or beauty through visual composition.

The elements of visual art

Visual artists work with a shared set of basic elements: line, shape, color, texture, and space. How an artist combines these elements — a bold, thick line versus a delicate one, warm colors versus cool ones, a busy composition versus a sparse one — shapes how a viewer experiences and interprets a finished work, often well before they consciously notice any specific subject matter.

Major visual art forms

Painting applies pigment to a surface, ranging from precise realism to abstract expression. Drawing uses lines and shading, often as a foundational skill or a finished work in its own right. Sculpture creates three-dimensional works, whether carved, molded, or assembled, that occupy real physical space rather than a flat surface. Photography captures light directly onto a light-sensitive surface or sensor, and has become an art form in its own right alongside its documentary and commercial uses.

Style and technique

Different artists and artistic movements develop distinct styles, involving both the visual choices they favor and the technical methods they use to make a piece. Learning to recognize a specific style, or an artist's characteristic techniques, is a large part of how art historians and critics study and classify visual art.

Why the visual arts matter

The visual arts have documented human experience, culture, and belief across every recorded civilization, communicating ideas and emotions in ways words alone often cannot, and they continue to shape how people see and interpret the world visually, well beyond dedicated art spaces.
