An introduction to the branches of engineering covered in this section
Welcome to Engineering
Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to design, build, and improve real, working systems — buildings, machines, circuits, and processes that shape everyday life.
What you'll find here
This section is organized into the major branches of engineering: Civil (structures and infrastructure), Mechanical (machines and energy conversion), Electrical (circuits and power), Chemical (industrial chemical processes), Computer (processor and hardware design), Materials (metals, heat treatment, and failure analysis), Biomedical (medical devices and imaging), Aerospace (aircraft and flight), Industrial (process efficiency and logistics), Environmental (water treatment and pollution control), Agricultural (farm machinery and irrigation), and Nuclear (reactor design and radiation).
How to use this section
Each branch has three levels — Student, Advanced, and Expert — so you can start wherever feels right and go deeper whenever you're ready. Many of the branches connect closely with each other and with the Physics and Chemistry sections, so feel free to explore in whatever order interests you most.
