An introduction to the branches of Earth science covered in this section
Welcome to Earth Sciences
Earth Sciences studies our home planet — its rocks, its oceans, its atmosphere, and the physical forces that shape all of them. It brings together physics, chemistry, and biology to understand Earth as a connected system.
What you'll find here
This section is organized into the major branches of Earth science: Geology (rocks, plate tectonics, and Earth's deep history), Meteorology & Atmospheric Science (weather and the atmosphere), Oceanography (the ocean), Hydrology (fresh water on land), Geography (places, maps, and how people and land interact), Climatology (long-term climate patterns), Environmental Science (ecosystems and natural resources), and Geophysics (the physics of Earth's interior and magnetic field).
How to use this section
Each branch has three levels — Student, Advanced, and Expert — so you can start wherever feels right and go deeper whenever you're ready. Many of the branches connect closely with each other and with the Physics and Chemistry sections, so feel free to explore in whatever order interests you most.
