Narrative structure, poetic meter, and stylometry

What are the literary arts?

The literary arts encompass writing crafted as art — fiction, poetry, and drama — using language deliberately to tell stories, express ideas, and evoke emotion, going beyond language's purely practical, everyday communicative use.

Major literary forms

Fiction tells invented stories, ranging from short stories to full-length novels, built around characters, plot, and setting. Poetry uses condensed, often rhythmic or patterned language, frequently relying on imagery, sound, and figurative language to convey meaning and feeling with fewer words than prose typically uses. Drama is written specifically to be performed, structured around dialogue and stage directions rather than narration.

Elements of storytelling

Most narrative literature shares certain core elements: characters (the people, or people-like figures, the story follows), plot (the sequence of events that happen), setting (where and when the story takes place), and theme (the underlying idea or message a story explores). How skillfully a writer develops and combines these elements is central to a narrative's effectiveness.

Figurative language

Writers frequently use figurative language — words and phrases meant to be understood beyond their most literal sense — to add depth and vividness. Metaphor directly describes one thing as though it were another; simile compares two things explicitly using "like" or "as"; symbolism uses a concrete object or image to represent a larger, more abstract idea. These techniques let writers express complex or subtle ideas more vividly and memorably than plain, literal description often can.

Why the literary arts matter

The literary arts have preserved and transmitted human stories, ideas, and cultural values across generations, and they continue to shape how people understand themselves, other people's experiences, and the world more broadly, offering insight and emotional connection that factual writing alone often cannot provide.
